Dr Michael Edwards

Michael Edwards is a Distinguished Senior Fellow at Demos, a Network for Ideas and Action, in New York, a Senior Visiting Scholar at New York University's Wagner School of Public Service, and a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Brooks World Poverty Institute at Manchester University in the UK. From 1999 to 2008, he was the Director of the Ford Foundation's Governance and Civil Society Program in New York, and also co-founded the Seasons Fund for Social Transformation. Mike is also a Trustee of the Center for Contemplative Mind and Society in Northampton, Massachusetts.

Prior to joining the Ford Foundation he was the World Bank's Senior Adviser on Civil Society in Washington DC, where he led a program designed to improve the agency's understanding of, and engagement with, a wide range of civic groups. Before moving to the World Bank, Mike spent 15 years as a senior manager in international relief and development NGOs, including periods with Save the Children-UK (as Director of Research, Evaluation and Advocacy), Oxfam-UK (as Regional Director for Southern Africa), and Voluntary Service Overseas (as Head of Development Education).

Mike graduated from Oxford University with a congratulatory double-first and was awarded a PhD by the University of London for his work on low-income housing markets in Latin America.

Key recent publications

Michael Edwards' many books and articles have helped to shape our thinking about civil society, politics, social change and international cooperation. He has recently written a revised 2009 edition of his acclaimed book, Civil Society. In this revised edition, Edwards updates the arguments and evidence presented in the original (2004) publication and adds major new material on issues such as civil society in Africa and the Middle East, global civil society, information technology and new forms of citizen organising.
