Tackling challenges of development: Some recent experiences in Bangladesh.

Professor Choudhury has recently retired as the Vice-Chancellor of BRAC University, one of Bangladesh's leading private universities and the Brooks World Poverty Institute's leading research partner in South Asia. He is Bangladesh's leading civil engineer and his work on infrastructure development in low-income countries and disaster management has the highest international reputation. His contributions have been in three related areas: higher education and professional development; designing and constructing major infrastructure developments; and as a leading actor in civil society.

Over recent decades the growing political and socioeconomic power of middle income countries has obtained wide-spread attention. A newly emerging middle is changing the global balance of power. While most attention has been focused on Brazil, India and China (the so-called BICs) a further tier of countries 'Beyond the BICs' is emerging to a more prominent place in the global economy. This ESRC-funded research network seeks to push forward thinking about the future role of this rising middle in the global governance of poverty reduction.

This event is part of the Advanced Graduate Workshop 2010 co-hosted by the Brooks World Poverty Institute (BWPI) and the Initiative for Policy Dialogue, Columbia University (IPD).

“Getting Multidimensional Poverty Measurement Right” - Public guest lecture


BWPI presents a public guest lecture by:

Julio Boltvinik (Colegio de México)

Friday 25 June 2010, 3.30pm

Julio Boltvinik is a leading specialist on poverty and social inequality in Latin America and teaches at the Colegio de México, 'Mexico's Harvard.' He has also achieved fame as a leading public intellectual in the country. His weekly op-ed contributions to the leading national newspaper La Journada are a cornerstone of public debate around poverty in Mexico, as are his frequent appearances on television. Julio's exciting academic output has covered a range of poverty-related issues, including Sen's Capability Approach, Mexican poverty, and the impact of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) on Mexico.
