The Effective States and Inclusive Development Research Centre (ESID)
The Effective States and Inclusive Development Research Centre (ESID) is a network of researchers and policy partners in Bangladesh, Ghana, India, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, the UK and the USA.
ESID is hosted by the University of Manchester and is funded by the UK’s Department for International Development.
Researchers and practitioners agree that an effective state is central to inclusive development. ESID research will look at how state capacity and elite commitment to development can emerge and be sustained over time, and how to support this process.
ESID research will be organised around three domains....
- the economic, with a focus on strategies for growth, employment and the sustainable exploitation and governance of natural resources;
- the social, in terms of delivering basic services and social protection; and
- the political, with regards to the recognition of citizenship for women and other excluded groups.
.... and three core research questions:
- What forms and levels of state capacity are required to underpin inclusive development in different domains?
- What are the incentives and ideas that shape elite commitment to inclusive development and state effectiveness?
- Under what conditions, and with particular reference to power relations and ideas, do developmental types of state capacity and elite commitment emerge – and are sustained
